The
volleyball season might be done, but the newly minted 6A Conference champion
Xavier Prep Gators are not.
Senior
outside hitter Lanie Wagner, who helped the Gators defeat Tempe Corona del Sol
for the state title, is one of eight nominees for azcentral.com’s Volleyball
Player of the Year. The elite eight were announced on Thursday (Nov. 30).
Wagner had 537
kills on the season, most for 6A players, and averaged 4.5 kills per set. She
has signed a letter of intent to attend school and play for the University of
Georgia.
The other
nominees are Kamaile Haipo of Mesa Skyline, Alexis Keith of Gilbert Perry,
Gabby Leo of Phoenix Mountain Pointe, Peyton Lewis of Tucson Salpointe
Catholic, Brooke Nuneviller of Corona del Sol, Mary Shroll of Tempe Prep and
McKenzie Wise of Peoria Sunrise Mountain.
Winner of
the award will be announced in June at a ceremony honoring athletes from all
sports.
