DON KETCHUM is a native of Phoenix. He was a sportswriter for The Arizona Republic/The Phoenix Gazette for nearly four decades. He covered high school sports on several occasions as well as the Arizona Diamondbacks, Arizona Cardinals and Arizona State sports. From 2008-14, he was a staff writer for AIA365.com, the web site of the Arizona Interscholastic Association.

Xavier spirit lines shine in state competition

It’s been a big weekend for Xavier Prep's spirit lines.

The Gators' show cheer squad earned the state championship and Xavier finished as runner-up in the all-girl Pom category on Saturday (Jan. 20) at Chase Field in downtown Phoenix.

Both teams will advance to national competition Feb. 23-25 in Anaheim, Calif.

Way to go, coach Monica Gaspar and your Gators !!
