For the
second straight week, the Gators are playing three games in the same week.
They have an
11-0 record after Thursday night’s (Dec. 13) 69-18 victory over visiting
Phoenix North, and now turn their attention to a road contest against
Scottsdale Chaparral (5-6) on Friday night (Dec. 14). Tipoff is 7 p.m.
Coach
Jennifer Gillom said the team had been stressing with closer games at Phoenix
Desert Vista and Phoenix Mountain Pointe, and her team’s shots were not falling
with the same consistency in previous games.
Against
North, the Gators returned to Gillom’s blueprint with three double-figure
scorers and better accuracy with 3-point shots (they made eight).
Xavier
outscored the Mustangs 23-0 in the first quarter, and the race was on. The
Gators continued to employ their suffocating press, and North had no answer.
“We play
hard “D’ (defense), and that takes a lot of intensity night-in and night-out,’’
Gillom said. “We had a little more of that tonight.’’
On offense,
10 Xavier players scored. Senior point guard Leilani McIntosh led the way with
18 points, followed by senior guards Addie Putnam (16) and Paris Rasheed-Moore
(10).
Looking at
Friday night’s game, Chaparral's record is somewhat deceptive.
Gillom said
the Firebirds “are a disciplined team that shoots well and is able to execute.
We have to make sure that we play our game, not theirs.''
