Corona can't take a breath as Gators press

A complete suffocation.

Xavier Prep’s basketball team used its full-court press to squeeze every bit of air out of visiting Tempe Corona del Sol 91-16 on Friday night (Nov. 30) in the Gators’ second home game of the season.

Believe it or not, Corona del Sol actually had the lead by scoring the game’s first basket.

Then the tsunami came as Xavier (6-0) scored 35 straight points through the rest of the quarter.

Senior sharpshooter Addie Putnam scored 20 points in the quarter and would go on to nearly double that, finishing with 39 points. Four of her baskets were from 3-point range.

Senior point guard Leilani McIntosh scored 16 points and junior guard-forward Elysia Fleetwood tallied 10.

Xavier applied the pressure with the starters on the floor in the first quarter, eased up a bit when coach Jennifer Gillom brought in players off the bench in the second period and was back at it in the third when the starters returned.

This was after XCP had built a 50-7 lead at halftime. The Gators went on to outscore the Aztecs 32-4 in the third. The fourth period was played under a running clock.

Xavier will return to action on Tuesday (Dec. 4) with a road game at Avondale Westview. Tipoff is 7 p.m.

Xavier Prep 91, Tempe Corona del Sol 16

XCP – Addie Putnam 39, Leilani McIntosh 16, Elysia Fleetwood 10, Paris Rasheed-Moore 9, Tanya Barakat 4, Cara Coffman 4, Victoria Saucedo 4, Sophie Sash 3, Mackenzie Coder 2.
