Basketball, soccer return to action for XCP

Xavier Prep’s basketball and soccer teams will get back to business this week with their first few games of 2019.

The basketball team will be looking to rebound from two tough losses to Phoenix Shadow Mountain and Phoenix Horizon in the Lady Titan Winter Hoops Classic just before the calendar flipped forward.

The Gators (16-2) will be playing their first 6A Premier Region game of the season when they travel to face Gilbert Perry (11-5) on Tuesday night (Jan. 8).

Xavier also will have a home game on Friday night (Jan. 11) against Chandler Basha.

Xavier is led by its three senior guards – Addie Putnam (18.3 points per game), Leilani McIntosh (16.7) and Paris Rasheed-Moore (10.8).

In soccer, what would happen if the 6A Conference champion were to meet the 5A winner?

We will get a good idea on Thursday night (Jan. 10) when two-time defending 6A champ Xavier plays a road match against Scottsdale Chaparral, which won the 5A crown before jumping to 6A.

Xavier is 6-2-1 after a 2-1 finish in the Excalibur Tournament of Champions in southern California, and Chaparral is 8-2-2.

The Gators will have another road match on Friday night at Tempe Corona del Sol.
