He covered high school sports on several occasions as well as the Arizona Diamondbacks, Arizona Cardinals and Arizona State sports. From 2008-14, he was a staff writer for AIA365.com, the web site of the Arizona Interscholastic Association.

Spring roundup: Beach v-ball, tennis triumph

Xavier Prep’s beach volleyball team opened its season on Wednesday (Feb. 27) with a 4-1 road victory over Oro Valley Ironwood Ridge, near Tucson.

Results: No. 1 Trinity Cavanaugh-Shannon Shields, X, def. IR 19-21, 21-8, 15-1; No. 2 Abby Converse-Serena Turner, X, def. IR 21-17, 21-11; No. 3 Tori Burton-Lydia Rush, X, def. IR 21-19, 21-15; No. 4 Zaira Reyes-Shea Sciarappo, X, def. IR 21-12, 21-12; No. 5 Tiffany Tellez-Katelen Tellez, X, lost to IR, 15-21, 15-21.

Xavier will play its first home match at the Cavanaugh Courts on Friday (March 1) against Tempe Corona del Sol at 4 p.m.

Tennis

Xavier won it second straight match of the season on Wednesday with a 9-0 victory over Corona del Sol at Xavier.

The tennis team will participate in the Kiwanis Invitational on Friday and Saturday (March 2) at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, the site of the annual state tournaments.

Lacrosse

Xavier Prep came within a whisper of earning its second straight win before falling to Phoenix Desert Vista 9-8 on Wednesday night at Pecos Park in Phoenix.

The Gators play again on the road on Monday (March 4) against Phoenix Horizon at Sunrise Middle School in Phoenix at 5 p.m. One day later, on Tuesday (March 5), the Gators finally get to play their first home match, against Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep at 5:30 p.m.

Track and field

Xavier stumbled in its first competition of the season on Wednesday, a 72-51 dual-meet setback to visiting Gilbert Perry at the Brophy Sports Campus.

Next up on the schedule is the AMDG Invitational on March 7 at the Brophy Sports Campus. Start time is 2 p.m.
