Flynn's 5-inning perfect game helps Gators reach 9-2

Xavier Prep’s softball team scored in double figures in most of its early season games. Now the Gators are on the verge of entering Double-Digit Land in victories.

After two big shutout wins over Avondale La Joya and Phoenix Trevor Browne on back-to-back days, Xavier is now 9-2.

The Gators’ latest triumph came against Trevor Browne on Tuesday (March 26), 11-0 in a game shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule. On Monday (March 25), Xavier routed La Joya 25-0, also in five innings.

The win over Trevor Browne was noteworthy because freshman pitcher Riley Flynn tossed a perfect game. Last week she threw a no-hitter against Chandler Hamilton.

Against Trevor Browne, she struck out 14 in five innings, and the only other out was not put in play between the white lines – it was a pop foul to first baseman Elliot Smith to end the first inning.

Freshman shortstop Bridget Donahey started things off with a two-out home run to left field for a 1-0 lead. The Gators scored another run in the second, four in the third and five in the fourth.

Catcher Macy Lee and second baseman Sydney Johnson had two-run singles in the third, and a two-run double by Donahey highlighted the fourth.

Xavier had 31 hits against La Joya. Donahey also homered in that contest and had five RBIs, and third baseman Jazmin Andrade had a home run. Outfielder Cameron Martin was 5-for-5 with five RBIs.

Flynn pitched a hitless first inning and Analisa Roman worked the next four, giving up just two hits.

Xavier will hit the road – the long road – for its next game on Thursday (March 28). The game will be in Yuma against host Kofa High.
