Dechoux, Stutz-Kershner get tennis byes

Sandwiched in between rounds 1 and 2 of the Division I state team tennis tournament is state competition involving the top singles and doubles players.

In the singles and doubles event that begins Friday (April 26) at the Gene Autry Sports Complex in east Mesa, Xavier received first-round byes for its two teams.

Xavier’s hope in singles rides with senior Tristanne Dechoux, with the No. 2 seed. She will play her first match on Friday at 1:30 p.m. against the winner of an earlier first-round match between Nidhi Pulicherla of Chandler Hamilton and Natalie Esparza of Goodyear Millennium.

The Gators’ doubles team will be junior Erica Stutz and freshman Ryan Kershner, who have the No. 3 seed. They will take the court at 1:30 p.m. against the winner of an earlier match between Anthem Boulder Creek’s Taylor Kile and Darlene Maitem and Marana’s Aubrey Oldham and Brinley Miller.

Friday’s second-round winners will move on to Saturday’s (April 27) quarterfinals at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale. Quarterfinals are at 1:30 p.m. and semifinals are at 4:30 p.m.

Championship matches will be held Monday (April 29) at a site to be determined.

The first round of the Division I team tennis tournament will be held on Tuesday (April 23) with the second round held on April 30. Xavier, the No. 2 seed, will host No. 15 Surprise Shadow Ridge in the first round at 3 p.m.
