Lacrosse
teams need to play with urgency from the opening draw, not just in the last few
minutes of a match.
That is the
dilemma that faced Xavier Prep’s Gators on Monday night (April 8) against
visiting Tempe Corona del Sol at Petznick Field.
Xavier struggled
in the first half as Corona seemed unstoppable with a 4-0 run, and the Aztecs
went on a 3-1 run to begin the second half to put the Gators in a 15-8 hole
with 17:32 left.
The Gators
then came to their senses, scoring five times down the stretch, but by then it
was too late as Corona held on for a 15-13 victory.
Corona
climbed to 6-3 and Xavier’s record evened out at 5-5. The Gators next play a
makeup match at home on Wednesday night (April 10) against Scottsdale Notre
Dame Prep.
Xavier coach
Jen Nevatt acknowledged that her team needs to play with more motivation.
“We have to
figure out how to do that, play more aggressively from the get-go,’’ she said.
“The biggest
thing is we need to learn from this and use it in our remaining games.’’
Xavier got
four goals apiece from Nina Mackey and Grace Martinez, two each from Caroline
Andreen and Sarah Minton, and one from Bridget Wickers.
