DON KETCHUM is a native of Phoenix. He was a sportswriter for The Arizona Republic/The Phoenix Gazette for nearly four decades. He covered high school sports on several occasions as well as the Arizona Diamondbacks, Arizona Cardinals and Arizona State sports. From 2008-14, he was a staff writer for AIA365.com, the web site of the Arizona Interscholastic Association.

Gators have 2nd-place finish in BCP/XCP invite

The annual Brophy/Xavier swimming and diving invitational was held on Saturday (Sept. 21) at the Brophy Prep aquatic complex and Xavier Prep finished second to Scottsdale Chaparral in team competition.

Among the Gators’ top individual efforts were those of senior Maddie Wright, who won the 200-yard freestyle and finished second in the 100-yard freestyle.

Junior Jordan Herrera was third in the 200-yard individual medley and fifth in the 500-yard freestyle. Junior Kelly Scott was fifth in the 50-yard freestyle and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle. Sophomore Gracie Munk was fourth in the 100-yard butterfly and second in the 100-yard backstroke. Senior Olivia Paliscak was fifth in the 100-yard butterfly and eighth in the 50-yard freestyle.

The XCP divers had a solid day, led by senior Maddy Sewell’s fourth-place finish.

Congrats to all of these great Gators, and good luck in your next competition, which is a dual meet on Thursday (Sept.26) against Tempe Corona del Sol at Brophy.
