Swim-dive again in fine form with Chandler Invite win

Chomp! Chomp! Chomp!

It was another big effort for Xavier Prep’s swimming and diving team on Saturday (Sept. 15) as the Gators splashed their way to a victory in the Wolves Classic Invitational at Chandler High pool.

Xavier outdistanced 21 other teams, with 307 points. Phoenix Desert Vista was second with 228 and Mesa Mountain View was third ait 226 ½.

One of the strengths of Xavier’s team is in its relay teams, and it showed.

The Gators won all three relay events.

In the 200-yard medley relay, sophomore Gracie Munk, junior Paola Guerra, junior Jordan Herrera and junior Kelly Scott triumphed. In the 200-yard 200-yard freestyle relay it was sophomore Hope Nolan, Guerra, senior Vica Dow and Scott. And in the 400-yard freestyle relay, it was Herrera, Dow, Munk and  junior Mia Rankin.

Xavier also was strong in the individual events.

Rankin won the 200-yard individual medley and was fifth in the 500-yard freestyle. Herrera was third in both the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. Munk was third in the 200 IM and fourth in the 100 fly. Scott was second in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle.

And the divers put forth a fantastic effort, led by senior Maddy Sewell’s fifth-place finish out of 36 competitors. Two promising freshmen, Libby Surgent and Claira Chong, were at No. 19 and No. 25, respectively.

Xavier will be back in the pool for more action this week. The Gators will face Mountain View on Thursday (Sept. 19) at Kino Pool in Mesa. And the team will co-host the annual Xavier-Brophy Invitational on Friday (Sept. 20) and Saturday (Sept. 21) at the Brophy Aquatic Complex. Diving competition is Friday, swimming on Saturday.
