Arizona State Hall induction includes Coach Tui

A tip of the cap to Tui.

Tui Selvaratnam, Xavier Prep’s associate athletic director and golf co-head coach, will be honored this weekend as part of Arizona State University’s Athletics Hall of Fame celebration for 2019 when she and members of ASU’s 1995 undefeated team will be inducted and honored at halftime of ASU’s football game against Washington State on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 12).

She was a redshirt freshman during that season, along with two-time XCP state champion Keri Cornelius, and went on to play four more years for the Sun Devils. Selvaratnam was a part of several NCAA Champion teams led by long-time coach Linda Vollstedt.

Selvaratnam  was an All Pac-10 Second Team selection in 1998 and 1999 and was chosen for the conference’s All-Academic First Team in 1999 and Second Team in 1997 and 1998.

Xavier's Tui Selvaratnam
She has continued to play at a high level since graduating from ASU in various national and Arizona women’s amateur competitions. She also has won numerous tournaments in Asia.

When she first came to ASU from her native Sri Lanka, Selvaratnam said she was essentially a “walk-on’’ who wound up impressing Vollestedt and earning a spot on the Sun Devils’ roster.

And the rest is history.

She said the main things she learned while playing for ASU were “patience, teamwork, camaraderie and working hard. It got me where I am now and I try to teach those things to the girls here at Xavier.’’

Also, if a team is down a number of strokes during a tournament, she lets the players know “that it’s not over until it’s over. You always have a chance.’’ She said she experienced that first-hand at ASU when the Sun Devils rallied.

Quite a few Xavier players have gone on to ASU, including current Sun Devils coach Missy Farr, Madison Kerley, Grace Park and Katie DeFrancesco. Current Gator seniors Ashley Menne and Breyana Matthews will join the ranks next year.

Selvaratnam hopes they had/will have the same experience as she did.

“It was a great five years I had there,’’ she said. “I loved every minute it. It helped provide me with many great opportunities.’’
