Xavier soccer gets 5-0 win in consolation contest

Xavier Prep’s soccer team played a pair of tough defensive matches in the annual Excalibur Tournament in Norco, Calif., on Thursday (Dec. 26) and Friday (Dec. 27), falling in both, and had another match on Friday in the consolation round.

In that later contest, the Gators again had a good defense but this time had the offense to go with it for a 5-0 triumph over host Norco in a consolation match.

The Gators lost to Capo Valley (Mission Viejo, Calif.) 2-1 on Thursday and fell to Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) 2-0 earlier on Friday.

“Overall, it was a great trip,’’ said Xavier coach Barb Chura. “All matches were competitive. We were in every game.’’

Xavier (4-3) will return home to Petznick Field to kick off the New Year on Jan. 8 against Scottsdale Chaparral. The Gators will follow that up with a road match at Gilbert Highland on Jan. 10. Start times for both are 6 p.m.
