Xavier hoops back in the business of winning

After dropping two games in a row, Xavier Prep’s basketball team returned to the win column on Friday night (Jan. 17) with a 65-41 triumph over host Chandler Basha.

The 6A Conference Premier Region win evened Xavier’s region mark at 1-1 and put the Gators’ overall record at 15-5. Basha slipped below .500 to 9-10.

Xavier has two home region games this coming week, against Chandler High on Tuesday (Jan. 21) and against Chandler Hamilton on Jan. 24. Hamilton defeated Xavier in last season’s state championship game.

Senior guard-forward Elysia Fleetwood had a strong all-around game against Basha, leading the Gators in scoring with 16 points (8 of 12 foul shooting) and contributing 7 steals, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. She was named by Coach Jennifer Gillom as the Player of the Game.

Xavier assumed control early with a 20-6 run in the first quarter and later began the third quarter in similar fashion with a 20-8 advantage.
