DON KETCHUM is a native of Phoenix. He was a sportswriter for The Arizona Republic/The Phoenix Gazette for nearly four decades. He covered high school sports on several occasions as well as the Arizona Diamondbacks, Arizona Cardinals and Arizona State sports. From 2008-14, he was a staff writer for AIA365.com, the web site of the Arizona Interscholastic Association.

Perry edges competitive XCP soccer in 2 OT

Xavier Prep’s soccer team was competitive down to the wire with defending 6A Conference state runner-up Gilbert Perry on Tuesday night (Feb. 4), but Perry was able to escape with a 1-0 victory in double overtime at Perry.

Brenna Alderson gave Perry (14-2-2) the win with the late goal, off an assist by Kasie Vigil.

Junior Jaden Campbell was strong in goal for Xavier (6-7-1), collecting 20 saves.

The Gators will return home to Petznick Field on Friday night at 6 for their final match of the regular season against Chandler Hamilton. The contest will begin at 6 p.m.
