DON KETCHUM is a native of Phoenix. He was a sportswriter for The Arizona Republic/The Phoenix Gazette for nearly four decades. He covered high school sports on several occasions as well as the Arizona Diamondbacks, Arizona Cardinals and Arizona State sports. From 2008-14, he was a staff writer for AIA365.com, the web site of the Arizona Interscholastic Association.

Xavier hoops better but not enough to win

Xavier Prep’s basketball team and Gilbert Perry met for the second time this season on Friday night (Jan. 31), and although the Gators played much better than they did in a lopsided loss to the Pumas on Jan. 15, Perry was able to escape with a 53-49 6A Premier Region victory.

Xavier’s overall record dipped to 16-8, while Perry improved to 15-7.

The Gators play their final home game of the regular season on Tuesday night (Feb. 4) against Chandler Basha. Their last two regular-season games will be on the road, on Feb. 7 at Chandler High and Feb. 11 at Chandler Hamilton.

Xavier was 11th in the most recent compilation of 6A power points, with the next list due to be released on Tuesday.
