DON KETCHUM is a native of Phoenix. He was a sportswriter for The Arizona Republic/The Phoenix Gazette for nearly four decades. He covered high school sports on several occasions as well as the Arizona Diamondbacks, Arizona Cardinals and Arizona State sports. From 2008-14, he was a staff writer for AIA365.com, the web site of the Arizona Interscholastic Association.

Runners have good showing in W. Equinox event

 Xavier Prep’s cross-country team finished second and fifth, respectively in separate categories and junior Tatum Goforth won one of those two, the 5K Run Open Big Schools Session I in the Western Equinox Cross Country Festival  on Saturday (Sept. 19) at Freestone Park in Chandler.

Goforth’s effort of 20:19.3 enabled the Gators to finish second in that category, only three points behind winner Gilbert Highland.

In the 5K Run Varsity Big Schools Session I, Xavier finished fifth with 131 points. The top individual for XCP was junior Ansley Burns, who was 18th at 19:57.2.

Xavier will run next on Sept. 26 at the Ray Wherley Invitational at Pioneer Park in Prescott.
