The Division I state swimming and diving championship for 2020 likely will come down to a battle between Scottsdale Chaparral and Xavier Prep.
The two have
combined to win the last three titles – Xavier in 2017 and Chaparral in 2018
and 2019. Chaparral also won the Division II crown in 2016 and 2017.
On Thursday
(Sept. 17), they will renew that rivalry when they meet again at the Brophy
Prep pool.
Chaparral
has a number of Olympic-caliber swimmers (yes, you are reading that correctly).
Xavier has a number of senior swimmers who have three previous years of
experience, most notably distance athlete Mia Rankin, who has committed to Ohio
State. Xavier also is traditionally strong in the relay events.
Xavier is
once again coached by Mark Rankin and Jenny James, along with first-year coach
Tootie Rankin. The divers are coached by Frank Pipitone. The team’s student
manager is senior Maddie Weiland.
The Gators’
noteworthy seniors are Paola Guerra, Jordan Herrera, Kelly Scott and Emma
Sharp.
