Xavier Prep’s 2020 badminton season came to a conclusion on Tuesday night (Nov. 10) with a 5-0 setback against three-time defending Gilbert Perry in a Division I state tournament quarterfinal at Perry.
Xavier
finished the season at 8-7, primarily with its all-senior lineup. Perry
improved to 15-0 and was due to play host to Chandler Basha in a semifinal
match on Wednesday night (Nov. 11).
“Perry
played solid badminton and were on their game. Our girls did their best to give
them a competitive match,’’ said Gators coach Laura Forbes.
The seniors
who will be moving on after graduation are Lina Vanderwey, Sophie Riviere,
Lauren Etsitty, Mia Velasco, Malindi Kilb and Zoe Barton.
“I am very
proud of the team’s effort this season,’’ Forbes said. “They played through all
the Covid uncertainty, worries and protocols to have a very successful season.
“These girls
were not only excellent competitors, they were often complimented on their
great sportsmanship and friendly manner.
“As our full
squad of seniors end their high school badminton careers, I cannot think of a
better legacy for them to leave our JV team than how important it is to compete
with equal parts of character and athleticism.’’
