Another soccer shutout, Gators await bracket

Xavier Prep’s soccer team likes seeing a zero next to the opponent’s name on the scoreboard.

On Thursday night (March 4), the Gators earned their sixth win of the season, all by shutout, with a 3-0 victory over host Phoenix Mountain Pointe in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Xavier (6-2-1) finished the regular season as the No. 5 team in 6A Conference power points rankings issued by the Arizona Interscholastic Association at noon on Friday (March 5).

The Gators will, however, have to wait until Saturday morning (March 6) for the release of the final rankings and state-tournament brackets. Xavier is expected to host a first-round match on Tuesday night (March 9), likely against Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor or Peoria Liberty.

Liberty and Sandra Day O’Connor sent a few shock waves through 6A in recent days with identical 3-1 wins over Chandler Hamilton, one of the favorites to capture the crown. Hamilton, which defeated Xavier in overtime earlier in the season, now is one spot behind the Gators at No. 6.

Xavier defeated Sandra Day O’Connor 3-0 on Feb. 19 at SDO, but did not face Liberty.

Against Mountain Pointe, sophomore Eva Allen continued her season-long run with two more goals, giving her a team-high seven along with a team-high five assists. Sophomore Savannah Angell scored Xavier’s third goal.

Goalkeeper Ella Eberhardt got the shutout for Xavier, giving her three on the season to match fellow senior keeper Jaden Campbell.
