Xavier Prep’s basketball team continued to steam toward the playoffs with an 88-35 victory over host Chandler High in the Gators’ final road game of the regular season on Tuesday night (March 2).
Xavier (10-3) will play its final home game of the regular season on Friday night (March 5) against Gilbert Perry. The Gators defeated Perry 62-52, at Perry on Feb. 2.
The Gators moved up from No. 5 to No. 3 on Wednesday (March 3) in the latest Arizona Interscholastic Association's power points rankings for 6A Conference teams. Xavier is behind top-rated Chandler Hamilton and No. 2 Surprise Valley Vista. The Gators' three losses are to those teams, Valley Vista in the regular season opener and Hamilton on two other occasions.
Xavier had five players score in double figures against Chandler, led by what perhaps was the team’s top all-around performance of the season.
And it was by a freshman – guard Sarah Miller. She put up 18 shots and converted 13 of them for a team-high 31 points, and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. Teammates who also were in double figures were freshman guard Dominique Nesland (13), sophomore guard Sienna Cherwinski (12), sophomore forward Hannah Young (10) and freshman guard Maureen Ulrich (10).
Ulrich had seven rebounds and Nesland six, along with four assists.
