Turner, McCann rule in beach championship pairs

Xavier Prep still has that beach volleyball magic.

Just one week after helping the Gators win the D-I state championship, senior Serena Turner and sophomore Summer McCann were back at it on the sand at Casteel High in Queen Creek for the Division I state championship pairs event.

The two Gators went 4-0 over the two days, first on Wednesday (May 19) and then with the semifinals and finals on Thursday (May 20).

Turner and McCann, who won their match in the team finals against Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor, were taken to the limit in Thursday’s semis by SDO’s Sydnee Broadway and Margo Smith, by the scores of 21-17, 18-21 and 15-10. Turner and McCann were the No. 2 seed, Broadway and Smith No. 3.

The finale featured Turner and McCann against No. 5 Rylee Achtzehn and Alexis Peck of Scottsdale Desert Mountain. Achtzehn and Peck began the pairs event on Wednesday with a 21-19, 21-11 first-round win over Xavier’s other duo of unseeded Lexi Yoza and Landree Coats.

Turner and McCann were presented gold medals for their efforts.

Congrats to both Xavier teams!!
