Red-hot I-Ridge outpaces Gator golf in tourney

Xavier Prep’s golf team had an early lead in Saturday’s (Aug. 28) second and decisive round of the One-Off Invitational Tournament hosted by Cave Creek Cactus Shadows, but Oro Valley (Tucson) Ironwood Ridge rallied to win the event at the Phoenix Papago Golf Course, with Xavier finishing second.

Ironwood Ridge, the two-time Division II defending state champion, finished with a 593 team score, 14 shots better than Xavier, which won its 37th Division I state title last season.

Peoria Liberty finished third, Cactus Shadows fourth, Goodyear Millennium fifth, and Phoenix Desert Vista sixth.

I-Ridge’s Zoe Newell was the tournament’s medalist with a 6-under-par 138 over the two days. The top Xavier golfer was junior Annie Dawson, who was at 147.

Liberty’s Mattie Frick, who was last year’s D-I individual champion, finished with an even-par 144.

The remainder of Xavier golfers and their two-day totals:

Senior Ivy Song, 153, sophomore Kate Hauptman, 154 and sophomore Lauren Campbell, 156.

Sophomore Jayden Jevnick’s 75 counted toward the Gators’ team score on Friday’s (Aug. 27) first day, but she had to withdraw after 14 holes on Saturday.

Xavier will return to its Phoenix Country Club home course on Wednesday (Sept. 1) against Chandler Basha.
