Golfers finish 2nd, Hauptman 3rd among individuals

Xavier Prep’s golf team gave it a good shot in Saturday’s (Sept. 4) second day of the two-day Brophy Rodeo presented by Ping, but could not manage to overtake the Bishop Gorman team from Las Vegas to finish second, five shots back.

After shooting a 15-over-par 295 as a team and sitting in third place in Friday’s (Sept. 3) opening round at the Wigwam Golf Resort in Litchfield Park, the Gators were one shot better in the finale and managed to finish as the top team from Arizona in the 15-team event.

Sophomore Kate Hauptman, who was Xavier’s top finisher in Round 1, maintained her consistency in Round 2. She was at 1-over 71 in Round 1 and 1-under 69 in Round 2 to finish with an even-par 140.

Defending Arizona Division I state champion Mattie Frick from Peoria Liberty wrapped up the two days to earn medalist honors with a 4-under-par 136, and Phoenix Pinnacle’s Carolyn Fuller came in second, one shot ahead of Hauptman with a 1-under 139.

Xavier has two matches in the coming week, facing Mesa Desert Ridge and Phoenix Desert Vista on Wednesday (Sept. 8) at the Foothills Club West Golf Course in Ahwatukee, and joining the field for the Aguila Invitational on Thursday (Sept. 9) at the Aguila Golf Course in Laveen. The course was the long-time site of the state tournament before it was moved to Tucson in recent years.
