Badminton: doing the math doesn't always calculate

Somehow, mathematics formulas can do strange things.

Take, for instance, the Arizona Interscholastic Association’s badminton power points list. The 16 teams left standing at the end of the regular season will advance to the Division I state tournament.

Xavier Prep was No. 16 entering Wednesday’s (Oct. 15) Senior Day home finale against Chandler Basha, but fell 8-1. So when the rankings came out on Thursday (Oct. 16), the Gators (7-10-1) saw that they actually had climbed one spot, to No. 15, just ahead of Mesa Desert Ridge. Basha is ranked fourth.

The final team rankings likely will be determined after the last matches of the regular season, on Oct. 19.

Wednesday’s result

Basha 8, Xavier Prep 1
