Singles, doubles badminton players exit early at state

Xavier Prep badminton players made an appearance in Friday’s (Oct. 22) first day of Division I state tournament competition at Glendale Independence, but did not stay as long as they would have liked.

In singles, senior Jasmine Leyva won her first-round match against Adamaris Lopez Morales of Chandler High, advancing to the quarterfinals with a 21-9, 21-12 victory. That second match was much more of a challenge as Chandler Hamilton’s Samiya Bodhankar cruised to a 21-2, 21-5 win, eliminating Leyva.

The Xavier doubles team of junior Gigi Riviere and senior Sophia Bonilla took Mesa Skyline’s Shadyn Russo and Emily Muir to a full three sets in the first round, but the Skyline duo won 16-21, 21-19 and 21-12.

The full Xavier team, meanwhile, enters the team portion of the tournament on Monday (Oct. 25) as the No. 15 seed, traveling to face No. 2 seed and four-time defending state champion Gilbert Perry at 6 p.m.
