It was a great way for Xavier Prep’s golf team to finish the regular season and begin to focus on defending their Division I state championship on Nov. 1-2. The Gators have won 37 state championships.
By defeating
Cave Creek Cactus Shadows and Glendale Mountain Ridge in a three-way match at
the Palm Valley Country Club in Goodyear on Wednesday (Oct. 6), Xavier finished
10-0 in dual/three-way competition (not counting invitationals).
And the
Gators did it in impressive fashion. Three of their top four golfers finished
under par (par 35), to give the team a four-under 136. Cactus Shadows finished
with a 6-over 146 and Mountain Ridge was at 31-over 171.
The top
three golfers for Xavier were sophomore Kate Hauptman (3-under 32), junior
Annie Dawson (2-under 33) and sophomore Jayden Jevnick (1-under 34). The fourth
player contributing to the team score was sophomore Lena Durette (2-over 37).
Other Xavier
scores were sophomore Kalyn Doss (2-over 37), sophomore Grace Rubelsky (3-over
38), senior Ivy Song (3-over 38) and sophomore Kyla Layman (4-over 39).
The golf
team will now take a break of sorts, working on individual aspects of their
game, and will play in a state preview event on Oct. 18 at the Aguila Golf Course
in Laveen.
From there,
it will be on to the Tucson National Golf Club for the state tournament on the
facility’s Sonoran Course.
