Mountain biking competition is increasing in popularity across the state that according to the Xavier Prep/Brophy Prep club team coach Rich Perrott, the Xavier group is the largest female team ever to race in the nine-year history of the Arizona Interscholastic Cycling League.
The
Gators/Broncos finished second behind Queen Creek Casteel for the fourth time
in as many races after the circuit’s South Conference Division 1 on Saturday
(Oct. 23) at the White Tank Regional Park in the west Valley community of
Waddell.
The Xavier
group, which features 13 riders at the various levels, has a total of 12,496
points thus far, just 133 points behind Casteel entering the state championship
race on Nov. 7 at the Wren Arena in Fort Huachuca.
Xavier had
the fourth- and fifth-place finishers in the 20-mile (4 loops of 5 miles) in
the Varsity race, Aria Tseffos (fourth) and Mary Hill (fifth).
The Gators
also have had strong efforts from Grace Morgan in the JV races this season, and
she came through again on Saturday with a fifth-place finish in the 3-loop
race.
