Editor’s note: Due
to some incorrect information provided through the Nike tournament bracketing, Xavier
Prep originally was listed as the seventh-place finisher in the Platinum
bracket, but wound up as the No. 8 finisher against the Sacred Heart Academy of
Louisville, Ky. The XCP Files has corrected its previous post and apologizes
for the error.
Xavier
Prep’s volleyball team had a big first day on Friday (Oct. 1) in the Nike
Tournament of Champions with three victories in its pool (G) and began
Saturday’s (Oct. 2) play with another triumph at the Kroc Center in
south-central Phoenix, qualifying for the top bracket, the Platinum.
Saturday
morning’s triumph was against Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas.
But the
Gators hit a rough stretch of road after that against a pair of Arizona teams,
Phoenix Horizon and Tempe Corona del Sol. The struggle continued in the
seventh-place match in the Platinum, where Xavier fell in three sets against
the Sacred Heart Academy of Louisville, Ky.
Xavier
finished with a very respectable 4-3 record for the tournament and now is 17-7
overall.
Horizon
finished as the Platinum’s runner-up, falling to Marymount (Calif.) in the
title match. Corona del Sol, meanwhile, took fifth place with a victory over a
Texas School, the Cornerstone Christian Academy.
Xavier will
have back-to-back home matches this week, against Phoenix Sunnyslope on
Wednesday (Oct. 6) and Peoria Liberty on Thursday (Oct. 7).
