Two for two.
Xavier Prep’s basketball team claimed its second victory in as many games to open the 2021-22 season, stopping host Phoenix Sunnyslope 53-34 on Friday night (Dec. 3).
As with most teams at this point in the season, the Gators were off the mark with some of their shooting, but were able to find more of an accurate touch in the second half. An aggressive defensive effort helped clear the way.
Xavier had an eight-point lead at halftime and put more space between it and the Vikings with a 16-7 run in the third quarter.
Key plays in the third were two steals that set up scores by sophomore guard Dom Nesland and another by sophomore Sarah Miller, who finished with a team-high 17 points.
Miller, Nesland and junior guard Sienna Cherwinski all had a 3-point basket.
After two road games, Xavier will play its home opener on Monday night (Dec. 6) against Phoenix North. Varsity begins at 7 p.m., and JV at 5:30.
