Basketball rolls to first-round victory

Xavier Prep’s basketball team took a successful first step in the 6A Conference state tournament on Wednesday night (Feb. 16) with a 68-35 victory at home over Premier Region rival Chandler High.

Second-seeded Xavier (18-5), which had defeated No. 15 Chandler on two previous occasions this season, will move on to a quarterfinal game on Feb. 22, this one also at home in the Activity Center.

The opponent will be No. 10 Phoenix Pinnacle (22-8), which defeated No. 7 Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor 55-36 on Wednesday night at O’Connor. Xavier faced Pinnacle during the regular season on Dec. 9 and came away with a 76-46 victory.

Xavier had three players score in double figures against Chandler – all sophomores. Sarah Miller led the way with 25 points, Dom Nesland had 16 and Maureen Ulrich had 12. Nesland and Ulrich also had six steals each as Xavier totaled 23 on the night.
