Soccer, basketball teams continue dominance

Xavier Prep’s soccer and basketball teams stayed far ahead of their opponents on Thursday night (Feb. 3), setting themselves up for their few remaining regular season contests before the state tournaments begin.

The soccer team had its biggest output of the season, scoring 19 goals while shutting out host Phoenix South Mountain.

The Gators are now 7-2-2 before wrapping up the regular season on Monday night (Feb. 7) at Chandler Hamilton.

The basketball team, meanwhile, made its long trip to Tucson an enjoyable one with a 60-38 win over host Tucson High.

Xavier raised its record to 15-5, while Tucson slipped to 18-6.

The Gators had three players score in double figures – sophomore guard-forward Sarah Miller (24 points) and sophomore point guard Dom Nesland and junior guard Sienna Cherwinski (14 each). Cherwinski hit four 3-point baskets and Nesland two.

Nesland also had nine assists and four steals.

Senior forward Toni Garcia  had seven rebounds and four steals and sophomore guard Maureen Ulrich had seven rebounds.

Xavier has two remaining regular season games.

The first is a make-up game at Chandler Basha at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 5). And the regular season finale is on Tuesday night (Feb. 8) at Chandler Hamilton.
