Dyer's growing maturity helps XCP tennis lineup

Danielle Dyer has had a lot of growing up to do in her time on the tennis courts at Xavier Prep.

Last season, she played an integral part for the Gators after being put together with then-fellow freshman Belanie Soto in doubles, and they made it all the way to the Division I final before falling to Scottsdale Desert Mountain.

This season, Dyer has displayed even more maturity, becoming a stabilizing factor in the No. 2 singles spot for coach Laurie Martin, and has teamed up in the top doubles pairing with senior Ryan Kershner.

In a key matchup against a tough Scottsdale Chaparral team on Wednesday at XCP’s Stark Tennis Center, Dyer won her singles match, 6-2, 6-3 and teamed with Kershner to take doubles, 8-4.

That helped to put the Gators’ overall record at 4-1 with another match scheduled for the third straight day on Thursday (March 10), this time at Gilbert Perry.

Martin said Dyer “is a good, young player, very athletic and very fast. An opponent can think they have the ball put away when she gets over and tracks it down.’’

The coach added that Dyer and Kershner have worked well together.

“They want to play together and play together at state,’’ Martin said. “They have worked really hard and have done a good job.’’

Senior Victoria Chrostowski provided a pivotal moment against Chaparral, when she won an 11-9 tiebreaker in the No. 3 singles match. Had it gone in the other direction, it might have changed the complexion of the match.
