Softball scores four in 7th to rally past O'Connor

Sometimes a game comes easy. Other times, it is more of a challenge, such as the encounter between the softball teams from Xavier Prep and Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor on Monday (March 7) at O’Connor.

Xavier scored three times in the first inning but later fell behind, then rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh for a 7-5 victory, giving the defending 6A Conference champion Gators an 8-1 record. O’Connor slipped to 3-4.

The Gators connected for three home runs, two by sophomore infielder Lauren Putz and one by senior shortstop Bridget Donahey. Those two players combined for six hits. Infielder Izzy Hycnar drove in a pair of runs and outfielder Elliot Smith had three hits.

Senior pitcher Riley Flynn gave up 10 hits against O’Connor, walked four and struck out eight but still managed to get credit for the victory.

Xavier will have two more games this week – at home against Phoenix Pinnacle on Thursday (March 10) and on the road against Scottsdale Chaparral on Friday (March 11).
