Tuesday (April 26) signals the start of the second state tournament for spring sports, tennis, and Xavier Prep is in the middle of all the action, as usual.
Xavier won five of 10 titles in the 2010 decade, the last in 2019.
The second-seeded Gators appear to have a good chance at another Division I title, and the biggest obstacle is expected to be top-seeded Scottsdale Desert Mountain, which handed Xavier (13-1) its only loss of the regular season, 7-2 on March 9.
In Xavier’s next match, the Gators rebounded with a 7-2 win over Chandler High and won all the rest of its matches. And Chandler will be Xavier’s opponent in the first round at XCP’s Stark Tennis Center at 3 p.m. on Tuesday. Chandler is 10-5.
The winner advances to the quarterfinal round on May 3. There is a one-week gap in the remainder of the team portion of the tournament, as the individual singles and doubles will be played beginning Friday (April 29) and running through with championships in those categories on May 2.
Xavier’s top players for coach Laurie Martin are senior RyanKershner, sophomore Danielle Dyer, senior Victoria Chrostowski, sophomore Belanie Soto and sophomore Megan Wheeling and senior Lily Gabler.
