Xavier Prep’s illustrious tennis program has been fueled by strong performances in individual singles and doubles, particularly the latter.
Now the
Gators have a new duo to add to the list.
Top-seeded
senior Ryan Kershner and sophomore Danielle Dyer won Division I quarterfinal
and semifinal matches on Saturday (April 30) at the Paseo Racquet Center in
Glendale, putting them in Monday’s (May 2) championship match at 5 p.m., also
at Paseo.
Kershner and
Dyer defeated eighth-seeded Reese Schibel and Chae Rin Youn, 6-2, 6-1 in the
quarterfinals on Saturday morning. In the afternoon, the Xavier team prevailed
over Phoenix Desert Vista’s fourth-seeded Natalie Visic and Grace Rooney, 6-0,
6-1.
Analise and
Tessa Wachtel, the tourney’s No. 3 seed representing an outstanding Scottsdale
Desert Mountain team, will face Kershner and Dyer in the title match. The
Wachtels defeated Scottsdale Chaparral’s second-seeded Brooke Berbeco and
Jordyn Isaak, 2-1 (retired) in the semis.
The last
state doubles triumph for Xavier was part of a three-year run by Margaret Cohen
and Scarlet Rush in 2012, 2013 and 2014. The last XCP state runner-up was the
team of Erica Stutz and Emily Even, in 2018.
