After scoring 20 goals in each of its previous two games, Xavier Prep’s club lacrosse team found itself mired in an early 3-0 hole against visiting Scottsdale Chaparral on Thursday night (March 31).
One must
have wondered if Xavier head coach Diana Oduho was wondering if her team was
capable of reaching the 20-goal level for the third straight time.
“Yes, I
did,’’ she said matter of factly.
“Because our
team likes to turn it around.’’
Down 4-2
with 16:58 left in the first half, Xavier went on a 7-0 run to build a
significant lead and went on to record a 24-11 victory.
The win was
important because the Gators were able to pull even at 5-5 overall after a 1-4
start.
Xavier’s
primary scoring group was out in full force, swooping in from the perimeter to
shake the net after the ball got past the Chaparral goalkeeper.
Gigi Riviere
scored six goals, Joan Walton, McKenna Boyer and Keilani Hong scored five each
and Marlee McCloskey added three.
“We have
come together as an offense and we have been very balanced this season,’’ Oduho
said.
The Gators
also have received a big lift from sophomore goalkeeper Kiana Beazley, who
again showed promise after being called up from the junior varsity earlier in
the week.
Xavier next
plays on Tuesday (April 5) at Petznick Field against Tempe Corona del Sol.
