Xavier beach pairs are back on the sand

 If you thought Xavier Prep’s chances of winning more matches in an Arizona Interscholastic Association state event had disappeared, think again.

Two XCP two-player “pairs’’ teams will be competing in the AIA Division I Pairs Championship beginning Monday (May 2) and continuing the remainder of this week.

Xavier’s top duo of junior Summer McCann and senior Landree Coats are the third-seeded team and received a bye to the second round on Wednesday (May 4) at 5 p.m. Xavier’s No. 2 tandem of Katie Anthony and Trinity Tran will play a first-round match on Monday at 5:45 p.m. against QueenCreek’s Elle Evers and Izabella Mahaffey.

All matches are at Casteel High School in Queen Creek, site of the Division I and Division II state championships that concluded recently.

McCann was part of the Xavier doubles team that included 2021 graduate Serena Turner and won the pairs championship. Turner now is playing as a freshman at Stanford University.

If Anthony and Tran win on Monday, they will advance to the second round on Wednesday. In that match, they would face No. 4 seed Bailey Decker and Reece Fischback of Mesa Mountain View, who receive a first-round bye.

Meanwhile, Xavier’s top duo will face the winner of Monday’s first-round match between Glendale Mountain Ridge's Gracie Birchfield and Madison Cartwright and Phoenix Arcadia’s Leslie Bugg and Rylie Sieben. That match begins at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Winner of the second-round match goes to the quarterfinals, also on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Semifinals are on Thursday (May 5) at 5 p.m., followed by the title match at 6:30 p.m.
